With a shortage of talent in the labor market, there is a growing demand for the unique skills of neuroatypical people, stemming precisely from their other cognitive skills. These include creative thinking out of the box, solving complex problems, unusual manual skills, innovative design, special empathy and many others. It is these competencies that can become a source of competitive advantage for companies.
Unfortunately, neurotypicals, face barriers such as: lack of awareness of neurotypical recruiters or recruiting managers who judge them negatively during standard recruitment processes. Often these people give up on their applications after reading a complicated job advertisement, during the difficulty of writing their resume or recording the video required in the process. That’s why it’s so important to use inclusive language in job ads, create a clear ad structure to encourage neuroatypical candidates to apply, and an understandable and flexible interview format.
It is very important to prepare the organization to work with neurodiverse people. There are many ways to do this. First of all, in order to ensure the best possible implementation and fit of new employees into the organization, a redesign of the recruitment and onboarding process is needed. The next step is to introduce training in effective communication and organization of work with neuroatypical people for both managers and co-workers. Introducing psychoeducation about neurodiversity can not only help create more integrated teams, enrich the talent pool and reduce attrition.
